Chris Cascio:
Culture Club

July 12 - August 30, 2026

The structure lacks stability; the fundament is frayed – swiftly we approach that amorphous moment in the maelstrom of memory, engulfed in negative light – floor-drop effect flickers on, forcing instant acceleration – first a trot, then gallop, followed by full-on steam-powered locomotion where one’s legs, if illustrated, would look like the vortex of space – so fast that the eye fails to register solid matter but instead a primordial whirlpool, cosmic stew, containing any old slop – and the speed of the swirl increases, and expands, and the floor gives way – the individual thrust to the edge of an expanding eddy, pressed firmly to the periphery where there is no more footing, only floating in the gently cycling abyss. This is Culture Club.

Christopher Cascio was born in New Orleans, and lives and works in Houston. He received his BFA in Painting & Drawing from the San Francisco Art Institute and his MFA in Painting from the University of Houston. Over the past decade his art has dealt with themes of obsession, compulsion, and ritual practice. He is primarily a painter but also works in drawing, collage, textiles, installation, and occasionally sculpture and video. He supplements his artmaking practice by regularly publishing books and zines. He has held solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Marfa. His work has been featured in New American Paintings, Art in America, Sneeze, Glasstire.com, and Vice.com. Cascio is an Assistant Professor of Studio Art at the Sam Houston State University School of Art and has taught at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.
