Verónica Gaona:
La última corazonada del día

June 6 - July 12, 2026

La última corazonada del día, reflects on the layered spatial and material implications of remittances as embedded social practices and rituals that sustain relationships across geographies. In Verónica Gaona’s practice, these repeated systems of exchange become forms of embedded memory, where economic flows, ephemeral materials and gestures extend into everyday life.

In the exhibition, Gaona examines how remittances function as social practices and rituals resisting capital structures by turning to funerary traditions of repatriation (“translados”), where the return of the body or its remains to the place of origin becomes an act of identification and belonging. These rituals not only repair death but also reaffirm continuity with home, symbolically resolving the ambiguity of ongoing movement. The desire for return in death emerges here as an intuitive pull toward permanence.

This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of artist and collaborator, Elijah Jimenez.

Verónica Gaona was born in Brownsville, Texas, on the U.S.–Mexico border and is based in Houston. Gaona received an MFA in Studio Art - Photography and Digital Media from the University of Houston (2021) and a BA in Mass Communications from The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (2018). Gaona was awarded the Latinx Fellowship Award (2023), the Chispa Award (2022) by the Andrew Mellon Foundation and Ford Foundation, and the Artadia Award (2021).
